Fandango’s one word challenge: Gallery

The first thought that popped up in my head for Fandango’s word for today was a comic book that I used to enjoy reading when I was an up-and-coming youth. That comic book was Detective Comics (DC) Batman’s Rogue Gallery.

Each story in that monthly comic book series have Batman pitted against his frequent foes. The battle of wits, detective work, and scientific gadgets used to defeat his dangerous foes.

Batman has been on the scene since 1939 and in the past 84 years, and his gallery has grown. True_George has listed the gallery of the original 10 rogues.

  1. Joe Chill (1939)

Joe Chill was the thug that murdered Thomas Wayne & Martha Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s parents in front of him during a robbery. The unfortunate event created the Batman.

  • Hugo Strange (1940)

This was Batman’s first foe that was considered a Supervillain. He was a scientific criminal who first went up against Batman after inventing a fog machine that makes ordinary men commit crimes with super ability.

  • Cat woman (1940)  

Cat woman can be considered Batman’s second supervillain foe, but actual evolved to be an anti- heroine. They were attracted to each other and eventually married.

  • The Joker (1940)

 Batman’s arch enemy ironically was not debuted has a deranged psychotic lunatic as he is known today. He first started out as a menacing criminal who murdered and robbed people. The character morphed into what he is known for today.

  • Clay face (1940)

Clay face is one of Batman’s super powered rouges who has the ability to morph his body into clay and turn himself in just about anything. However, the character didn’t begin with being super powered. Clay face started out as Basil Karlo a former actor who became a mask wearing murderer. Killing other actors that was involved in the remake of a movie he stared in. However, Basil was not the clay face that turned into a monster.  That honor belongs to Matt Hagen who became clay face 21 years after Basil. There have been several clay face characters it was that Basil was the original.  

  • Scarecrow (1941)

This villain showed up in the comic book “World Finest,” where Batman and Superman team up. The scarecrow was a villain who terrorized the enemies of the wealthy for a price. He used to use his appearance to terrorize, but later developed fear toxins that he now use to terrorize people.

  • The Penguin (1941)

Batman’s most elusive criminal. The Penguin started out working for a crime lord called “The Boss.”  The Penguin ends up killing “The Boss” and takes over the criminal organization. The Penguin develops a lot of tricks and gadgets that slows down Batman.

  • Two-Face (1942)

Harvey Dent a former District Attorney who was disfigured by crime lord Maroni aka “The Boss” when Maroni threw acid into his face. It turned him into a scarred madman who use a damaged coin to determine that fate of others.

  • Solomon Grundy (1944)

Grundy was a creature that returned from the dead with no memories of his past became a senseless killer and criminal. Originally an enemy to the Green Lantern, Grundy’s back story is that was a corrupted man named Cyrus Gold he was murdered and as a punishment he was revenant.

  1. The Riddler (1948)

Edward Nigma a puzzle expert learned that he could win by cheating. When he became an adult, he carried his cheating ways to become a career criminal. His entire goal is to create rigged puzzles designed for him to win against Batman.
