Religion of Sports

J Y Provocative Question #22:  Do you think sports are a national or folk religion? Do you think there’s a different “non-religion” that has become a national or folk religion in your country? Should there be a national or folk religion in the first place?

One thing that True_ George can agree is that sports is a religion with lots of worshipers. The gods are defined, and it is ironic that some of the sports gods are so well known that they are known to people outside of the sports.

Well, if you don’t believe this proclamation, go outside, and ask any person who has some type of awareness of what is going on in this world of ours, if they ever heard of Maradona, Pele, Muhammed Ali, Mike Tyson, or Usain Bolt. I bet that you’ll see how popular those gods are.

Anyway, does it matter if a particular sport is considered to be a national or folk religion? True_George says no, it doesn’t matter because it has been proven that a sporting event can unite people more then any organized religion.

Hell, take for instance that New York State politicians never agree on anything. But, the unthinkable happened during the 1990’s the one and only time that everyone in the New York State assembly agreed on something. That was to make the sports of mixed martial arts (MMA) illegal. Now, remember, that during that time period MMA was in its infancy and it was considered to be a “human cockfight,” simply because it was a no rule fighting competition.

Yes, this is an extreme example of unity. But, if a bunch of bums, I mean politicians in the New York State capital can finally unite it took an extreme sport to do it. So imagine how an event like the World Cup or Olympics bring people together.

Now as far as a “non-Religion” that has become a religion is the United States Constitution. The living document that many other countries have emulated is worshipped.

I suppose if True_George gets into the reasons why the US constitution is worshipped, this short post will be a book, so I’ll leave it up to your knowledge and imagination as to the reasons why the Constitution is worshipped.

Finally, True_George does not believe that any religion should be imposed on anyone whether folk or national. Simply because religion hinders the perspective of people’s mind set, and even hinder progress of a particular group.

Religion also fosters an atmosphere of discrimination and can be the driving force behind armed conflict and hate.

History has proven this, when a nation is governed by the edicts of religion, you’ll have a country of repressed individuals. But, despite the track record this thing of having a nation where the laws go according to religious doctrine is still being played out. Well as the old saying goes, “Lord forgive them for they know not what they’re doing.”

  1. I have to say I’ve never given the ‘folk religion’ thing much thought. But I do think organised religion has had its day really and it’s time it went. It does cause division and that does lead to wars and suchlike. If only all the religious folks would keep it to themselves, they could do whatever they liked and believe whatever they wanted.
