Closing Arguments

In the Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs aka P. Diddy sex trafficking and RICO case; the prosecution aka persecutors and the defense rest, now comes the closing argument. This is where the prosecution and defense summarize the case, tying or refuting the evidence, in an attempt to persuade the Jury to rule in their favor.

Some may call the closing argument of a case the catalyst that makes or breaks the entire case. The Lawyers who can deliver a convincing close is akin to an artist painting on a canvas, except for the model are the facts, and the canvas is the Jury’s imagination.

Plus, this is what the money buys. For the prosecution, it’s the tax payers that are funding the government’s attorneys. For the defense, it is coming out of the accused pockets. The richer the accused, the better is the defense.

For example, if O.J Simpson wasn’t rich enough to assemble a team of Lawyers that was dubbed the “dream team,” because O.J was able to afford the top Lawyers in the country to defend him against a double murder charged that would usually be a slam dunk case for the prosecution, O.J would have been convicted and be sitting in a cell on death row.

Instead, the dream team did the impossible, and successfully defended O.J, and set a standard. In Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs case, he has also assembled an all-star team, now we’ll see if the money was well spent.

The United States Assistant District Attorney (Prosecutor) who delivered the closing argument for the government was Christy Slavik. She took five hours to outline the government’s case, describing Combs as the leader of a criminal enterprise, who wielded power, violence and fear to get what he wanted.

The closing argument placed emphasis on sex trafficking, because the government only has to prove one instance of coercion to meet their burden of proof.

Contant creators that were observing the trial has reported that Slavik read her arguments off a note book. There was no real passion and it was observed that it put some members of the Jury to sleep.

The prosecution rebuttal was delivered by US Assistant District Attorney Maurene Comey, who said that the defense’s claims that stating that the case is about domestic violence, is not a defense against sex trafficking.

True_George finds that the government’s position is ridicules. That this whole case is an over reach of attempting to punish Combs for an act of domestic violence, a violation that cannot be held against him because the statue of limitations has expired. The victim, did not pursue criminal charges, the victim only wanted restitution which Combs paid to the tune of 10 million dollars.

Now the government decided to use Combs bed room habits and trumped-up charges of sex trafficking and RICO act. This is the kind of over reach that should not be allowed.

The defense’s closing argument and rebuttal was delivered by Marc Agnifilo. He argued that Cassie, and others were willing participants of the bed room activities. That all the witness testified that they felt they were in love.

Agnifilo acknowledges that there was some instances of violence, but it does not justify bringing charges of sex trafficking.

It was reported that when Agnifilo finished his closing, people observing the trial erupted in cheers.  So what does this tell you. That the public could see that the government has over stepped its boundaries.

So now the Jury will deliberate; the only concern is what will be the guidelines that the court will give to the Jury. It seems that the government does not play fair at all.

Good Luck Puff Daddy.
