Marcus Garvey Pardoned

Now that the door is closing on President Joe Biden’s presidency, it seemed that he done more things in the past month then he actually did in the last four years. But, one thing that has been like a tradition for our going Presidents, is pardoning people who were convicted of something in a court of law.

Sometimes, those individuals that manage to get a Presidential pardon may have some sort of political connection. But most Presidential pardons are usually done through months or even years of organized lobbying done by supporters of the individual in question.

Today, the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey (August 17, 1887-June 10, 1940), received a presidential pardon. The pardon was done on the 11th hour and perhaps was the last one of the Biden Presidency. It took a 15-year organized effort by his son Julius Garvey, and Howard University law Professor Justin Hanford for it to happen.

The 15-year effort means that it was presented to three Presidents, George W Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. Biden was the one who decided to make it happen. One would have thought that Obama would have done it, but it is coming out that Obama didn’t to much for the black community. Well, that’s another matter to be discussed for some other time.

Back in 1923, Marcus Garvey was convicted of mail fraud, concerning the selling of stock of his shipping company, “The Black Star Line.” The charges in itself were flimsy and trumped up by J Edgar Hoover’s agents.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation under J Edgar Hoover wanted to curtail Garvey’s activism and destroy his organization, the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). The UNIA was history’s most successful black organization. It had over one thousand divisions and over six million members in forty countries.

In the United States and Canada, the UNIA was the leading force for black nationalism, self-reliance and pan African identity.

During Garvey’s trial, his Lawyers urged him to cop a plea deal, but Garvey felt that his Lawyers were setting him up to fall in a trap, so he fired them and represented himself. However, Garvey lacked the law experience, the presiding Judge scoffed that he had to conduct regular law school for the benefit of Garvey. But due to Garvey’s lack of law experience he was convicted and sentenced to the max sentence for mail fraud conviction. Which at that time was five years in the Federal Penitentiary and a $1000.00 fine.

Garvey was imprisoned for three years before his sentence was commuted by President Cavin Coolidge in 1927. Upon release Garvey was deported and sent back to Jamaica, West Indies.

Well, it seems President Biden, who was just a senile old bastard during the past four-year Presidential term went out with a bang.
